I usually like to give websites the benefit of the doubt when they first drop things like this because coding is hard and it takes a little while to get them to work properly but this really pissed me off for several reasons. This has led me to be angrier than I normally would be about this sort of thing. I am going to list them as level headly as I can and also throw out some suggestions that I might follow if I were you… ((And I know this isn’t my usual content but I need to vent rn because I have been having a really bad couple of days as one of my grandmothers has just passed away and then this BS happens.))

What I understand of your actions

Tumblr, I applaud your efforts to rid this site of porn bots and other cancerous content that has plagued this website for a long time. But I think you gave yourself a bit of a tight deadline, don’t you think, 14 Days, that’s 2 weeks to rid this website of all inappropriate nsfw content. That’s insane!!! That’s like me doing ALL of my assignments for every single college class for the entire semester in a week. It is flat out ridiculous, especially with the bot you have as it’s going around and flagging memes, pixel pets, and STAFF REBLOGGED posts about Net Neutrality as being explicit and inappropriate. I believe if you were trying to rid the website of ALL nudity and sex acts in 2 weeks that might be possible but you would practically have to nuke all existing blogs no matter the content. Which is what you seem to be on target to do. And I know you are freaking out because Apple took your app off the app store (which is totally crazy and shows an unbelievable amount of being out of touch with internet culture and content) but for the love of god Tumblr, slow down take a breath and look at the problem you have created.

The problem here is the way you are going about this crusade against the unclean and your weapon against them. Let’s face it your flagging bot (or whatever your using) DOESN’T WORK. It’s been flagging non-explicit posts as explicit and it just reeks of a rush job. I mean you must be seeing the posts people are making. You are shutting down whole communities of people whose only safe place is here on Tumblr. For example, in the community, I mostly exist in at the moment and on this specific blog, Simblr, there are a lot of storytelling blogs that have nsfw sims based content in their stories and blogs  (naked sims, sims having sex, etc.) and they are obviously all up in a tizzy because a) you didn’t really carve out anything in your tou about gaming nudity and sex and sex and nudity in visual stories and b) the fact that a lot of their content is going to be taken down because of this change. Which is a normal amount of panic for a change like this and is annoying as all heck but is somewhat understandable. But it isn’t just that. One of the biggest most beloved blogs in the community, a directory for custom content and mods posted to Tumblr, @sssvitlans is going to have to shut down because the blog has been flagged as “adult” since August 2017, even though the blog is not explicit at all. This is what really put me over the edge with this thing the fact one of the most useful and popular blogs in the Simblr community is going to have to shut down since they are “adult content” even though they really aren’t. And if this is happening in the Simblr community it is happening all over Tumblr and that is just wrong.

Free Speech

I am not accusing you of hating this or that or trying to squash rights or anything here. I just wanted to point out that one of the pieces of content that has been flagged is this post, a post rallying support for net neutrality which I reblogged from you, the Tumblr staff… Which does point out a huge hole in your whole quest. It could possibly be used (at least in its current state) to silence Free speech. Again I am not accusing you of this or trying to insinuate anything I’m just pointing out this issue to you so you can hopefully fix it.

What I would do

I know that I’m just an almost nineteen-year-old community college student who is barely passing her first semester and not a huge web company with millions upon millions of dollars and years of experience but I would like to make a few suggestions if at all possible that may help you please the people of the internet and the worried outsiders and app store people.

1. Change the timeline

The very first thing I would do is move the deadline for these changes to make sure that I could work out the bugs and get feedback from the community about the changes I was making, how it impactted them and how to get what I want to get done, done with as little disruption to the Tumblr ecosystem as possible. Also, this would allow people who rely on Tumblr for their livelihoods who would be affected by these rule changes to find new places to go and put their work before it is lost or deleted off Tumblr.

2. Make it Easier to find Flagged Content and Dispute Claims

Currently, if Tumblr users have to scroll through all of their hundreds of thousands of posts to find ones that have been flagged then figure out how exactly to dispute the claim, dispute it, and then if successful that post will go to the top of their blog, which is kind of annoying for everyone.

3. Fix The Bot

Fix the flagging bot to make it more accurate and more able to do its job properly.

4. Get Feedback

I would definitely talk to the community when I was brainstorming how to fix problems as they are the lifeblood of the site and they also care about Tumblr’s success and well-being.

5. Make the Rules Clearer

Right now the new rules don’t really cover a lot of areas of Tumblr’s usage with nsfw work. Like gaming nudity and sex and visual storytelling with nudity and sex. Communicating these things more clearly to everyone might help this process go easier for everyone.

In Conclusion

This change isn’t the end of the world and I hope you, Tumblr actually decide to listen to us, the people of Tumblr in this time of panic and work with us to find a better way, because the people of the internet have been ignored enough this year. By politicians, big business and lawmakers, with Net Neutrality being destroyed and Article 13 passing we feel like we can’t doing anything to save and preserve the internet we love so much and I would hate for this to become another stone in the sinking ship that is the free internet. But it may be just that in the end. Thank you for listening to me and reading my letter to you, Tumblr. I hope you see this and take at least one thing I said to heart. I would hate to not have the community I have with Tumblr anymore.

Once you have your posts “reinstated”, they jump to the top of your blog out of order from their original place in the queue or date that you posted them on.

For most Simblrs that’s not a big deal! But for those who share screenshots using mods like Wicked Whims, you may want to give this a read!
